Oh my goodess. Shaun White is amazing!
He won the gold in 2006, and kept snowboarding between then and 2010. His performance in 2006 (he smashed everyone else) earned him the sponsorship of Red Bull. They paid to have a full-sized private halfpipe built on his property so he could keep training. He did, and perfected a signature move he made up himself. Nobody else had come close to being able to pull it off.
So in Vancouver, he sailed throuh the qualifying rounds, not making any mistakes. He still hadn’t ever publicly done his signature move. Then came the final.
Each competitor is given 2 tries at the halfpipe. The highest of the two scores is chosen. So at the end of the first round, Shaun White was ahead (he competed last), scoring 46/50 points from the judges. The next person up had 43 or so. He still had’t done his move.
The second round went by well- nobody scored over 46 points. So Shaun White was already the winner, without even going twice! But he had to. So, already knowing he had nothing to lose, White went full-go. Finally, on his last jump off the halfpipe, he finally did his new move. Perfectly. He scored 48.4/50. Incredible.
Shaun White had way more air than any competitors, going up like 30ft above the edge of the halfpipe. Other people were going, like 15-20ft.
