Snowboarding Secrets For The Awkward Set

Do you have good balance, excellent timing, and a disregard for your own personal safety? Snowboarding may be the sport for you! Take the first steps to a happy (and survivable) ski resort experience by reading the following tips.

The first thing you’ll want to do is check the weather report before you go. Ideally what you want is a blizzard, which means really small class sizes and lots of fluffy snow. If you’re just learning, you’ll be falling down A LOT, so you want lots of soft snow.

Don’t go early in the season, and don’t go late. Too early means not enough snow, and you will be landing on a ‘mountain’ with a decorative white cover (Ouch!). Too late means that repeated thawing and refreezing has turned most of the snow to ice just below the surface, which is also not a happy landing. The best time to go is mid-season, late December through January, depending on weather conditions.

Do NOT ask a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend to teach you. This will end up in frustration, because chances are, they are not trained in how to TEACH, no matter how skillful they may personally be at it.

It is not so easy, and you cannot figure it out on your own. You probably will hurt yourself if you attempt it, or run down unsuspecting children on the bunny slopes. Sharing the snow means that if you don’t know what you’re doing, stay in the lodge!

The instructors that work at the ski resorts are your best option. They will have familiarity with the terrain and training on how to get you to learn. Don’t be discouraged if you sign up for a class and find your fellow students are only six years old. If that is too humiliating for you, try a private lesson, which is not too much more expensive. Plus you get the instructor’s entire attention, and they can watch every time you make a mistake and offer suggestions.

When you take lessons, either on your own, or in a group, LISTEN to your instructor. Assume the teacher knows more than you and pay attention. Also try to put into practice what they tell you.

Remember that if you do follow all the instructors suggestions and you’re still not ‘getting it’, you can always ask the resort for a refund or do-over. It is in their best interest that you succeed (and come back again and spend more money). They may not automatically accommodate you, but it never hurts to ask.

Snowboarding is a huge thrill. Watching the Olympics makes us all want to be a ‘Flying Tomato’ for a few minutes. Just make sure you approach your snowboarding adventure with a certain amount of caution and preparation. Then go and have a great time!
